This endeavour was made possible by Al Safa’s compassion towards helping others, and united belief amongst employees for enabling equal opportunity to our brothers and sisters across the globe.
The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was created in 1950, to help millions of refugees who had fled or lost their homes. Today, over 70 years later, the organization is still hard at work, protecting and assisting refugees around the world.
Currently, there is more than 82 million forcibly displaced people around the world. Of the 82 million, 60% are from or reside in, member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. UNHCR launched the Islamic Philanthropy Program which harnesses the power of Zakat, Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah for meeting the humanitarian needs of forcibly displaced people. In addition, the Islamic Philanthropy program launched the Refugee Zakat Fund, to help those most in need. The Refugee Zakat fund is a trusted, Sharia compliant and pioneering structure that harnesses the power of Zakat to make a positive impact in the world by supporting the most vulnerable refugees and IDPs. The Refugee Zakat Fund is backed by 11 fatwas allowing UNHCR to receive and distribute Zakat, including a fatwa from the Canadian Council of Imams.

He Refugee Zakat Fund follows a 100% Zakat distribution policy, meaning all Zakat funds go directly to refugees, and UNHCR covers all other distribution costs. UNHCR’s Refugee Zakat Fund supports vulnerable families by providing them with cash assistance enabling them to support their essential needs, such as rent, food, healthcare, and debt repayment.
In some specific cases, Zakat may also be distributed in the form of in-kind assistance, such as core relief items, and hygiene/shelter/education kits. The Refugee Zakat Fund follows rigorous governance tools and is monitored to ensure transparency at every step, from donation to distribution of Zakat funds to eligible families.
